How to Choose the perfect photo for your Portrait

Picture Reference- Advice for choosing the perfect reference images of your loved ones and pets for a portrait commission

Whether looking through existing photos or capturing new images, there are several key points to consider when gathering your picture references together

  1. The 'perfect' portrait reference: Ideally front profile, head and neck visible, high quality, in natural light!

  2. Optimum distance: Is the subject close enough, without losing or cropping any relevant details or features..?

  3. Sufficient lighting: Is the reference picture lit enough, with enough details in the shadows to make out key features..

  4. True colours: Does the reference picture show the true fur or hair and eye colour of the subject..?

  5. Group images: For group portraits I can combine separate photos, if you don't have a photo of the subjects together.

  6. Pet personalities: To help capture the personality of your pet, try photographing them doing something they love.

  7. Memorial portraits: If you are considering commissioning a portrait of a loved one or pet who has sadly passed away, I realise that you may have limited references available. However, please don't worry; provide me with as many as possible, and I will work through them with you.
